@TheRingOfDOOM 0003: A Trip To Haight-Ashbury

I'm learning a ton while making these videos for @TheRingOfDOOM on my iPhoneSE and have infinite ideas for future shenanigans. In this one our hero meets Eddie The Eight-Headed Mink Snake AND Madonna in the Amoeba SF alley while on a trip down Haight Street. Thank you to Grape God, Slick Devious, Heems, DJ Shadow, En Vogue, and Gang Starr for letting(uh...no) me borrow your music (please know it is because I love you).

I'm currently road tripping across the country selling random items on eBay, including this eight headed mink that I FAILED to sell. I'm trying to use what I've got to build an empire (lofty goals I know) and thanks to my lack of eBay skills; I have some really weird shit traveling with me that I will get to use as costars in the series. If I make Eddie the Eight-Headed Mink Snake internet famous, maybe I can actually sell him on eBay?

1. Kavinsky - "Odd Look" 2013  *Guys who hold waitresses (or anyone) at knifepoint are definitely douchebags, good thing Kavinsky was there to play Captain Save-A-Ho and then kidnap her himself.

 

 

2. Michael Jackson - "The Way You Make Me Feel" 1987  *I don't think Michael Jackson was a douchebag, I think that he was acting like one in this video. This is not the right way to pick up chicks. Unbelievably, guys still run ladies off the sidewalk as a means of getting their attention. This is an awesome music video though, lots of funny adlibs and sound effects at the end.

 

 

 

3. Gogol Bordello - "American Wedding" 2013  *Most likely, this Gogol Bordello dude is not a douchebag, but, is playing one on tv. The lead singer was so great in Everything Is Illuminated, see:

Here he is acting like a douchebag in "American Wedding".

4. Defenders Of Style - "419" 2012 (UK Hip Hop)  *I'm pretty sure I wouldn't like this if the beat wasn't so good. There is a bunch of kidnappings in this video, kidnapping equals douchebag.

5. Gang Starr - "Code Of The Streets" 1994  *Cab drivers who won't go to Brooklyn are douchebags for sure.

1. LL Cool J - "I Need Love" 1987  *These are screaming lady fans, very appropriate for LL Cool J.




2. Gang Starr - "Ex Girl To The Next Girl" 1992  *He sounds so cold-hearted when he says "next".

3. Monie Love - "It's A Shame (My Sister)" 1990  *They tied stuff to the fan so that we can see that the fan is working?

4. Fugees - "Nappy Heads" 1994  *This is from the album that wasn't The Score.

5. X-Clan - "A.D.A.M." 1992  *There are some giant necklaces in this video.

6. Disclosure - "When A Fire Starts To Burn" 2013  *Fake evangelism music video. Disclosure is from the UK.

7. Jessie Ware and Sampha - "Valentine" 2011  *I love both of these artists, but, when Sampha sings I get that "I can't believe how good this is" look on my face. I still think he sounds like a combo of Aaron Neville and James Blake.

8. Sophie B. Hawkins - "Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover" 1991  *I liked this song when I was too young to know what she was talking about...and I still do.

9. The Beatles - "In My Life" 1965  *Among their many other great accomplishments, The Beatles turned many normal teenage girls into screaming fans.

10. OutKast - "Hey Ya!" 2003  *More fans of the screaming girl variety.

Ten Music Videos featuring Instrument Close-Ups

*You might find yourself wondering, why the hell would I want to watch ten music videos with instrument close-ups? Really these lists are just a way to put good music in a playlist (of sorts) without having to label them with a genre. It's all just good music, at least I think so.

1. Chromatics - "Cherry" 2012  *Chromatics are good, you should probably listen to them.

2. The Police - "Every Breath You Take" 1983  *I don't think I really appreciated The Police when my mom listened to them when I was a kid. I get it now.

3. Pretty Lights feat. Talib Kweli - "Around The Block" 2013  *I feel like a lot of people might really like this song. I think it's too in your face (or ear), like he wanted to try to create a big sound. I'm not sure what that really means, but, I do know that I'm not that into this song.

4. Gang Starr - "Jazz Thing" 1990  *From the Mo' Better Blues Soundtrack

5. Apollo Brown - "Time Passed Autumn" 2011  *For me this song/video is all about seeing the Phil Collins album in a frame. I prefer his "Tao Te Ching" song. This video is the weakest link of the ten, but, there is tough competition.

6. The Smiths - "This Charming Man" 1983  *The Smiths hang out in a dirty room and Morissey swings something around.

7. Player - "Baby Come Back" 1977  *Smoothed out jams on the classic rock tip.

8. New Order - "The Perfect Kiss" 1985  *It's always good to fit New Order videos in wherever possible. This video also has a cowbell.

9. Common - "Resurrection" 1995  *This is a great album.

10. Moby - "Porcelain" 2000  *There is a close-up of a piano keyboard, but, the video is one long close-up of someone's eye and presumably the stuff that they are seeing.

1.DJ Shadow - "Midnight In A Perfect World" 1996  *This is my all-time favorite song.

 

2. Lenny Kravitz - "Thinking Of You" 1998  *Lenny is totally nippin' out in this video.

3. Eels - "Novocaine For The Soul" 1996  *Everyone is floating in this video.

4. A Tribe Called Quest - "Can I Kick It?" 1990  *A Tribe Called Quest actually kick large letters which spell the word "it" in this video. Rad.

5. Quasimoto - "Rappcats" 2005  *Not surprising that a Madlib video would begin with a shot of a record player.

6. Lauryn Hill - "Everything Is Everything" 1998  *Not a traditional record player.

7. Kid Cudi feat. MGMT - "Pursuit Of Happiness" 2009  *I like that the people at the party are in slow motion and he isn't. It makes it seem like he has a superpower.

8. Pep Love - "Hip Hop My Friend" 2012  *The sample in this song is incredible.

9. DJ Shadow - "Walkie Talkie" 2003  *Animated record player.

10. Gang Starr - "Mass Appeal" 1994  *I love that Gang Starr and friends goes to a wintry beach in this video.

CONCLUSION: Music videos featuring opening shots of record players are really great songs.

8. De La Soul - "Stakes Is High" 1996  I love De La Soul, this is the title track one of the most incredible albums of all time.




9. Metallica - "Nothing Else Matters" 1992  This is here to show that basketball scenes are not just for Hip Hop videos. Plus, it's cute that they have a slow jam; it's actually my favorite Metallica song.



10. Salt 'N Pepa - "Shoop" 1994  This song is still awesome. Salt, Pepa, and Spinderella are some of the most inspiring women EVER.

2. James Blake - "Retrograde" 2013  *James Blake is always best when played loudly to better hear the intricacies of his music.



3. Patra feat. Yo-Yo - "Romantic Call" 1994   *2Pac is in this video! Also contains people riding illegally in convertibles, dogs, hanging laundry, bell-bottoms guy, and fierce dance moves.

4. Jody Watley - "Don't You Want Me?" 1987  *I love the sudden rainstorm, the choice of loverboy, and the innovative use of fans in this video.



5. Eddy Grant - "Electric Avenue" 1982  *The motorcycle is definitely one of the main characters in this video.



6. Santigold - "Disparate Youth" 2012   *This video makes me want to start a music video rating system and give this one top marks in every category.



7. The Knife - "Full Of Fire" 2013   *You may have heard of shock rappers (like Odd Future), this could be called a shock music video.



8. Aaliyah - "If Your Girl Only Knew" 1996   *I once saw Rahzel at a South Lake Tahoe casino do this song solo. I think this is one of her best songs.



9. The Fugees - "Fu-Gee-La" 1996  *This video and album cemented their classic status.



10. Gang Starr feat. Big Shug and Freddie Foxxx - "Militia" 1998  *This might be the only video in which I have seen one of those tall wicker chairs, plus, there is a ninja motorcycle chick that kicks Guru through a window.
