1. J Dilla feat. Nas "The Sickness" (Prod. by Madlib) 2016  "The Sickness," vocals recorded in 2001, is the bonus track on the iTunes release of J Dilla's "The Diary" album earlier this year on Nas' Mass Appeal Records.




2. K.Raydio and Psymun - "Sweet Dreamz" 2014  King Of The Category goes to Minneapolis' K.Raydio and Psymun for the most rotating head action in a video thus far.



The video reminds me of this Rolling Stones album cover.

3. Disclosure feat. Sam Smith - "Latch" 2012  This song is super played out now, but that doesn't change that this is an epic love song. I saw Sam Smith perform this song live at the Paramount in Seattle but he made it a slow jam, ew. Don't get me wrong, I love slow jams but I much prefer the original.




4. Joe Jackson - "Steppin' Out" 1982  This song still goes...hard.




5. Cyne - "Running Water" 2005  I love how many different special effects there are in this video. Cise Star of Cyne recently performed at a show I helped make happen at Barboza with Shing02, Spinmaster A-1, Marcus D, and Dex Amora. They all killed it.




6. Alessia Cara - "Here" 2015  Ballsy move to sample Portishead, but, she nailed it. The rest of her album is just meh to me. This song got her a big ol buzz, she'll be able to keep my attention if she stays weird but that may not be up to her at this point.




7. Jessie Ware - "Tough Love" 2014  Props to Jessie Ware for knowing how to be a classy pop star, she can even make a ponytail glamorous. I got to see her at an in-store performance at Sonic Boom in Ballard and later that evening at The Neptune Theater during her "Devotion" Tour in 2013.




8. FKA Twigs - "Water Me" 2013  You will lose this staring contest.




9. Glass Animals - "Cocoa Hooves" 2012  Slugs are pretty awesome as long as you don't accidentally step on them, which happens a lot in Washington. I am down with Glass Animals but their sound is almost too distinctive (almost too similar). Their "Love Lockdown" cover remains to be my favorite from their camp.




10. THEESatisfaction - "EarthEE" 2015  So glad that these ladies are Seattleites and I love that they're going to explore solo careers. Evolution and personal growth are where its at.



SassyBlack gets my vote for most inspiring social media presence (Dam Funk, Gary Vaynerchuck, and sometimes Russell Simmons are the fellow nominees). She's proving to us how hard work, a great attitude, an open mind, and having the guts to be yourself is the best way to succeed in this world. This is one of my favorite SassyBlack quotes so far.

Ten Music Videos With Power Jewelry

1. NxWorries (Anderson.Paak + Knxwledge) - "Suede" 2015  STONES THROW Anderson.Paak's septum piercing is the power jewelry but Folerio's tiny dog counts as a power accessory as well. I was down with Anderson.Paak before I heard this song but have now purchased my ticket to ride the "Suede" train. His Malibu album is the best full album I've heard in a very long time; thank you Anderson.Paak!





2. THEESatisfaction - "Recognition" 2015  THEESatisfaction have transcended the label Seattle Music and have moved into the Black Constellation. Mad recognition goes out to the ladies of Sub Pop for this project. Cat AKA SassyBlack is one of my three favorite people to follow on social media. Russell Simmons, Dam Funk, and SassyBlack are all about spreading the love and good energy. I fux with that hardcore.




3. Wati Heru X Kashaka - "New Blue Hunnids" 2015  All this Black light business is glowing power jewelry. It reminds me of the video for Kyla La Grange's "Cut Your Teeth." The beat is fire, the video is awesome, the lyrics are sus.




4. Heltah Skeltah - "Operation Lockdown" 1996  Shoutout to Wusaeng for scream-rapping Heltah Skeltah to me so I could fall in love with the Nocturnal album two decades late. The verse starting at 1:32 sounds almost exactly like Specs Wizard; trips me out every time.





5. Dynas + Tony Galvin feat. Slick Rick - "Who U" 2015  Slick Rick's signature eye patch, gold teeth, and chains make for an instantly recognizable animated character even without eyes or a nose. I wonder if there's already a Know Your Rap Chains quiz or app. Somebody jump on that.




6. SBTRKT feat. Roses Gabor - "Pharoahs" 2011  I actually think that this is the weakest song on his classic self-titled album...that just proves how rad the album is.





7. Diva - "Divinity" 2015  STONES THROW Her finger thingies are very much power jewelry but it'd be really hard to eat a sandwich with them on. Sacrificing lunch for fashion is a no go for me. Props to Diva for letting her inner weirdo shine.




8. Aku-Matu feat. The Lox - "An Ancestor From The Future" 2013  This lady is dope. Crazy that someone from the future has already contacted us via YouTube and there's not even 2016 views.




9. Lee Scott - "Butter Fly" 2015 (Produced by Dirty Dike) (UK HIP HOP)  I love that UK hard means baseball bats instead of guns. High Focus Records has quite a few artists on their roster but not all of them are that tight. I'm borderline disgusted and in awe of Dirty Dike; his "10 Dike Commandments" and "Pork Pie" had me hooked.





10. Kwamie Liv - "Lost In The Girl" 2016  I'm down with Kwamie Liv, she coo. Almost began another balloon list when I saw this. This song is aight but "5AM" and "Follow You" continue to be my favorites.

3. Anna Lunoe and Flume - "I Met You" 2012  *Some keyboards were drowned in the making of this video. This song is only sort of cool.

4. AlunaGeorge - "You Know You Like It" 2011  *This is the original version of this video and is a prime example of the special effect twins team.





5. Adian Coker - "Cream" 2013 (UK HIP HOP)  *I like this beat, it makes me forget that I'm not into scenes of destruction in my music videos. I found this on Pigeons and Planes.

2. Quarterflash - "Harden My Heart" 1981  *For me this song is all about one line, lucky for me it is in the chorus. My favorite part is when she says "Darlin' in my/your wildest dreams......." the rest is pretty great too.




3. Lykke Li - "I'm Good, I'm Gone" 2009  *This video is wonderfully weird. It took me awhile to catch on, but, Lykke Li is great.




4. Donell Jones feat. Left Eye - "U Know What's Up" 1999  *The sign at the beginning says La Face Place, I bet they play great music at La Face Place. I love Left Eye as the guest artist. She was fierce.




5. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers - "Mary Jane's Last Dance" 1993  *Tom Petty gets all freaky with Eminem's fake mom, Kim Basinger.




6. Massive Attack - "Karmacoma" 1995  *This video reminds me of that Four Rooms movie, but with more rooms. This is one of those bands that helped to form my infatuation with Bristol.




7. K-os - "Man I Used To Be" 2005  UPDATE: The video disappeared from YouTube so I included the other K-os sing that I like instead.




8. Janelle Monae feat. Big Boi - "Tightrope" 2010  *Janelle Monae is cool because when this song came out everyone was like, "damn, who is this lady? I've never seen anything like it". It takes balls to be an original and she's got em.
