1. Ari Lennox - "Night Drive" 2017  Ari has been touring the globe as part of J. Cole's Dreamville Records crew and collecting new fans every step of the way; myself included. This song went straight to the New Hotness Spotify playlist.




2. L'Orange feat. Del The Funky Homosapien - "Blame The Author" 2017  L'Orange is that dude 100%. One of the reasons I'm so all about his production is that he is smart enough to use samples with women's voices in them.  L'Orange's new album, The Ordinary Man, is due out October 27.




3. Falon Sierra - "Sprained Ankles" 2017  SEATTLE MUSIC   Love the effort that went into the video for this song, keep it up Falon! KEXP did a great interview with Falon around EMP Sound Off... peep it.




4.  J'Von - "Grey Beanie" 2017 SEATTLE MUSIC  I'll be a J'Von fan for life; I can't wait to see where his journey takes him. His animation always take his projects to the next level.

5. Last Word - "Andrew" 2017  Can't say enough good things about Last Word and this mix hosted by Brother Ali. Last Word is Brother Ali's DJ/Tour Manager/Super Homie and is currently driving the van I'm writing this in... until it's my turn to drive again. 6. Jessie Reyez - "Fuck It (Stripped)" 2017  I have yet to find a Jessie Reyez song I didn't like.




7. Wu-Tang Clan feat. Redman - "People Say" 2017  Wu-Tang Clan recently released an album many of us are afraid to listen to in fear it won't live up to our expectations. I will face my fears later today and get back to you...

9. Akua Naru - "My Mother's Daughter" 2017  Akua Naru's Mother must be so proud and honored to be featured in her daughter's music in such a way. It's beautiful to see women pay tribute to each other with their art.

11. ill Camille feat. Damani Nkosi - "Home" 2017 (produced by Georgia Anne Muldrow)  Still hoping to find a rabbit hole of dope producers that just happen to be women. For now, Georgia Anne Muldrow is the Queen.




12. LayFullStop - "YinYang" 2016  I discovered LayFullStop via the UK magazine/website Bonafide's 5 Essential New Voices In Rap. She's in a crew called Cul De Sac, a group whose video will appear on the next installment of bicycle videos (you should watch their 2016 video for "Know We Now" asap though, it's that awesome).

22.   Little Dragon feat. Faith Evans - "Peace Of Mind" 2017  This jam is almost too smooth... wouldn't mind if it hit a little harder but I felt the same way about Little Dragon's last release as well. I much prefer Faith Evans on this track to her "new" album with Biggie.




23. Zensofly - "Getting Started" 2017  I was blessed to meet Zensofly briefly at Cat's Cradle in Carrboro, North Carolina. She was headlining a show in the smaller room of the venue The #OwnLightTour was also performing in. Didn't get to catch her set cuz I was posted up at the merch booth but I loved discovering an artist in this way.

Banoffee - "Chrome Halo" 2017  Banoffee first appeared on my site back in February 2014 following the release of "Reign Down" but came back up on my radar lately when Andrew Matson (from the Princess Nokia article above) posted this video on Twitter. When I first researched Banoffee, I found out that in addition to being an Australian musician, Banoffee is also a dessert pie made of bananas... so that's tight.




10. King Krule - "Dum Surfer" 2017  The new album is due out October 13, here's what Fader has to say about it. Here's hoping I'll be able to catch one of the tour dates. Mike Ramos wrote an incredible piece about 6 Feet Beneath The Moon for The Stranger that documented how the album helped people get through difficult times in their lives; I remain very impressed by both the album and the article.




11.  Kali Uchis X Princess Nokia as interpreted by MassHendrix - "Corsa" 2017  Still can't figure out if these Mass Hendrix videos are endorsed by the musicians but the end result is awesome. Whatever is going on there, Mass Hendrix has built up quite a collection of YouTube videos and I respect that. #props




12. Ladi6 - "GURU" 2017  If you follow the directions in this video by the New Zealand artist, you'll likely be a more well-rounded and positive person. Give it a shot, are you happy now?




13. L'Orange - "The Ordinary Man" 2017  The full album will be released on October 27 but we are blessed with this Oddisee collaboration to tie us over until we hear the rest. If you haven't heard the Adult Swim released album he did with Mr. Lif, there's still time; that's one of the wicked awesome things about music.




14. Radiohead - "Lift" 2017  If I act on all my creative impulses, I'll eventually recreate this video  (and "Daydreaming") w/ @TheRingOfDOOM and laugh my way through the entire process. My love for music drives me to do such weird things these days and I'm more than okay with it.




15. Blockhead - "Funeral Balloons" 2017  I found out about this project by subscribing to the Phat Friend email list because hearing about music from the artist themselves is where it's at... and sometimes the only way.

I'm teaching myself photoshop by making these screen shot photocollages so I hope no one sues me. I'm about 60 hours into the 10,000 I'll need to master it. I'll happily remove the visuals from the artist's work if they ask; only one screen shot is used from each video.

1. L'Orange + Jeremiah Jae - "Death Valley" 2015  L'Orange has been dropping hints that he may be moving to Seattle. We would really truly love that L'Orange.

2. Rhye - "Please" 2017  This song went directly to my Give Slow Jams A Chance playlist on both Spotify and YouTube; it's that good. If you've been paying as much attention as I have, you'll have noticed that Rhye always keeps it classy.




3. Angelo Mota - "Eve" ft. Topaz Jones 2017  This was a Pigeon + Planes gem; and I mean gem. It seems their tastes have gone a little commercial these days but I get it. We all gotta make a living somehow. I'm just glad they're still doing it. But really though how smooth is this and who is this magical woman who draws you into the video in the first two seconds? Eve?

7. Leon Bridges - "Coming Home" 2015  Leon Bridges is one of the classiest stars to shine their light on the music world lately. The 28 year old's timelessness will likely ensure his career will last for decades.




8. Princess Nokia - "Biohazard Butterfly" 2017  2017 is the year of Princess Nokia in my universe. She's been working her ass off and it shows. Her YouTube game is strong and I love that sh**.




9. A Tribe Called Quest - "Dis Generation" 2017  Can't say enough good things about Tribe. Joey, Earl, Kendrick, and Cole must have been stoked to be mentioned by the legend in this track. 10. Sims - "Badlands" 2017  Everything about More Than Ever and it's promo has been awesome. Sims' live show was on point as usual, the album is great, and the visuals have been on a whole other level. Your efforts are appreciated Sims! We can't wait to see what you do next.

6. L'Orange + Mr. Lif - "Strange Technology" 2016  This song made it to my Currently Overplaying list; was just pleasantly surprised to see there's a video. Even though it sounds like him, Aesop Rock is not the guest emcee on this song;  Akrobatik and Gonjasufi are the costars.




7. Swet Shop Boys - (Heems + Riz MC) - "Zayn Malik" 2017  So glad to have discovered this duo; may they safely and swiftly get through every border crossing they come across.




8. Jessie Reyez - "Shutter Island" 2017  This song/video has so many feels in the best way, be prepared. I love her.




9. Jamiroquai - "Automaton" 2017  At first listen, this song is a little cringeworthy at spots but the video is wicked. Plus, I really love the word "Automaton" because it reminds me of the movie Hugo and Dan The Automator. That said, I will likely never watch this video or listen to the song again.




10. Mayer Hawthorne - "Time For Love" 2017  Mayer Hawthorne is winning at life. #fuxwiththetux

I just finished a book (Un Lun Dun by China Mieville) in which magical broken umbrellas (called uNbrellas) are used to protect (?) the citizens of the city under/above London from their biggest enemy yet, smog. Then, I saw this uNbrella today while walking in London and decided to resurrect this post from the depths of procrastination. You may not think you give a shit about music videos with umbrellas but I didn't know I was into Salt Beef on a Beigel (Corned Beef on a Bagel) until today; learning stuff about yourself is good. As if you needed convincing beyond the whole epic bagel thing, umbrellas have been chique since before Charlie Chaplin rocked one.

1. Main Source - "Looking At The Front Door" 1990  This umbrella's silhouette game is on point. I would have loved to hear the conversation about adding the umbrella as a prop to the video. Were they like "it needs something...shit, I got this umbrella, how bout this?...She could be like dating the umbrella or something?"



2. Cut Chemist - "My First Big Break" 2008  It's kind of awesome how much this umbrella adds to the video; since I find them almost useless in the real world (weird Seattle quirk). Since most rainstorms come with wind, umbrellas tend to make walking in a rainstorm a more stressful experience. I already knew I'd be down to go to any party in which Cut Chemist is the DJ but this video cements it; these people know how to have a good time.




3. Grimes - "Flesh without Blood/Life in the Vivid Dream" 2015  Grimes with a budget for music videos is one of the best things about life. Stay weird Grimes, I think you're great and loved that eight of the eleven people on your team were women when I worked my only stagehand shift for your show at The Showbox in Seattle in October 2015. #props




4. Bjork - "It's Oh So Quiet" 1995  My sister Ingrid made me a journal mod-podged with Bjork (as seen on the "Post" cover) on it in the mid 90s, it's filled with all sorts of teen angsty/crush/music lyric stuff since I was 16 when the album came out. Bjork has been inspiring me for decades and continues to do so with her new Bjork Digital Exhibition. I had an eight hour layover at the Reykjavik airport recently and they had this quote from "Joga" from the Homogenic album on a window that I had forgotten about, "I feel emotional landscapes they puzzle me." I've been trying to figure out what the hell that means for two weeks now but I still think it's rad she's achieved airport quote status. 





5.  Gifted Gab - "Dead Wrong" 2013  SEATTLE MUSIC  The musical journey of Gifted Gab will be the stuff of legends, she is one of the best rappers in Seattle...period. Gifted Gab was a perfect choice for the Swisher Sweets Convenience Store Sessions.



Gifted released "Gab The Most High" back in May 2016, this is what the Seattle Weekly thought about it.




6. L'Orange - "The Quiet Room" 2013  L'Orange has been steady grinding for years and makes the kind of music I love the most. He has excellent taste in both samples and in collaborators; Jeremiah Jae, Kool Keith, Stik Figa, Mr. Lif, and Homeboy Sandman. He's got a damn good squad behind him at Mello Music Group.




7. K.Flay - "Rawks" 2013  Hairless cat, mustard in reverse, big messes, slow motion scenes, flower head, AND an umbrella; this video totally rawks. She's headed out on tour in February, you should probably go see her.





8. Kool A.D. feat. Toro Y Moi + Amaze 88 - "The Front" 2014  The vibe is so right with this one; likely due to the supreme chillness of Toro Y Moi. That said, I can't recall any Kool A.D. music that I didn't like (but why would I want to remember that?).

9. Milosh - "This Time" 2013  Milosh flew onto my radar as a producer for Rhye when "The Fall" was released. This video is great because watching two people in love (the couple is Milosh himself and his wife, actress Alexa Nikolas) having a fabulous time together is a beautiful thing.




10. Tuxedo - "Number One" 2015  ReignCity hosted a sold out Tuxedo show at The Crocodile back in July 2015 and it couldn't have been more perfect. One of my favorite things about this video is that it is a really awesome commercial for Lacoste and New Amsterdam Vodka. I love the idea of sponsors for music videos because I hardly know any artists who actually have a budget to create visuals of this caliber.




11. Raven Matthews - "This Is Cinema" 2015  SEATTLE MUSIC  Raven Matthews life really is cinema, he is way ahead of the rest of the world in the game of self-awareness and embracing the weird and you should pay more attention. His Disco Christ album was released in July 2016 and it was so unique that no one knew which box to put it in... which is actually a really good thing. Peep an interview with him here.




12. ABRA - "Closet HD" 2016  I kinda think this song is a hot mess but I still fux with ABRA, she coo.


13. Rihanna ft. Jay-Z - "Umbrella" 2007  It's a no brainer. Get it Rihanna, you're a boss lady supreme. Thanks for being you.

4. L'Orange + Kool Keith - "The Green Ray" 2015  I'm loving all things L'Orange these days but have yet to see him live. His current label, Mello Music Group was recently dubbed The Most Successful New Indie Rap Label Of This Decade by Forbes magazine. When I saw Kool Keith at Neumos in 2014, he had a disappointing sad crew of cell phone checking squad on stage left (not pictured). 5. DJ Shadow - "The Mountain Will Fall" 2016  I'm so glad that DJ Shadow is evolving with his music because it's keeping him passionate about his craft. "Nobody Speak," the track from his new album featuring Run The Jewels is most definitely the cut. They recently shared how the collaboration came about with the Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, here's the link.  @djshadow



This October 3, The Mountain Will Fall Tour will be coming through The Showbox in Seattle, WA. One of my current jobs in the music industry happens to be Hospitality Coordinator at The Showbox and Showbox SoDo so 10/3/16 will be a pretty great day for me as I've been a fan since the Endtroducing tour brought him to La Luna in Portland as support of Jeru The Damaja in 1997.

Shabazz Palaces - "Motion Sickness" 2014 (SEATTLE MUSIC)  While the members of Shabazz Palaces do reside in Seattle, their music has transcended the boundaries of our city and have created their own Black Constellation. I love that they opened for Radiohead in LA, someone is very smart. @shabazzpalaces

10. Slick Devious feat. Janet Earth - "Hollow Planets" 2016 (PORTLAND MUSIC) The color of the fake barf(?) is what makes it for me. 10. Seinabo Sey - "Pistols At Dawn" 2014  This rad Swedish lady only releases great songs, she has three so far. The other two videos are in lists still under construction.

Jehst is a 16 year veteran of the UK Hip Hop Scene and can be found drinking tea in some of his music videos. Jehst also appears on Eight Music Videos with Animals, Ten Music Videos with Bridges, and Eastbound And Down Sampled.




7. MADlines - "The Weapon" 2014  *Seattle's BeanOne on the production. MADlines was previously featured on Ten Music Videos with Backwards Scenes as half of the duo Canary Sing with Hollis of The Flavr Blue.

1. Primal Scream - "Movin' On Up" 1991  *My mom had this cassette, she is cool.



2. Lady - "Get Ready" 2013  *Lady consists of Nicole Wray (worked with Missy Elliott's Supa Dupa Fly etc.) and Terri Walker (a British R and B singer). [Sidenote: Truly ridiculous that Blogger is unable to correctly incorporate the "and symbol" into blogs.] It is good solid music, I just don't hear myself listening to it that often.



3. MC Lyte - "Cha Cha Cha" 1989  *I didn't listen to MC Lyte in 1989 when I was eleven, but, I can now appreciate her for being a cool lady. My Lyte intro was "Ruffneck" in 1993.



4. Indiana - "Bound" 2013  *For me this song has three sections. The first lasts until 1:13 during which I wonder if this song will get a little better. The second part is from 1:13 to 2:16 in which I think maybe this song is pretty good. The third part from 2:16 to the end, I change the song because I don't like where the song goes. This can all be summed up by the YouTube comment for the video stating, "this song needs a good remix!"



5. Captain Murphy - "The Killing Joke" 2013  *Naturally Captain Murphy (aka Flying Lotus) would take lipstick to the next level.



6. L'Orange feat. Blu - "Alone" 2013  *I have no idea if there are actually any samples of vintage music, but, it sounds like it and that is cool. I briefly tried to research L'Orange and only found out that a French artist named Gilbert Bécaud had a song named "L'Orange" in 1964 which doesn't really sound like this.



7. Lyrics Born feat. Joyo Velarde - "Bad Dreams" 2003  *I don't love this song but I think Lyrics Born is great. My favorite part about him and the rest of Quannum in this era was that it was some of the only new music I was able to find when I was living in the mountains between 1997-2003. I was living in Lake Tahoe when this album came out so it wasn't unreasonable to find Bay Area music in the Tahoe City music stores. I know it sounds crazy but in 2003...I didn't even have a computer!



8. Amy Winehouse - "Just Friends" 2008  *Dear Amy, thank you for making great music.



9. Fugees - "Vocab" 1994  *I, like many others, didn't hear this album until I had already overplayed their 1996 album The Score. Wyclef's part starting at 2:19 is almost surprising because of his octave changes and bugged out eyes. The rest of the song is so relaxing and then he takes it somewhere kinda crazy.



10. The Beatles - "Day Tripper" 1965  *I love that these Beatles videos exist.
